Today's Lesson

Main Activity

For the mental warm up, call out a few random subtractions which will take the answer into the negative numbers.

For example:

9 – 11 =

10 – 20 =Β

Draw a number line to help if your child finds this difficult to start with. A thermometer is a useful model to use when moving into negative numbers.

Turn to page 70 in Abacus 4 Textbook 3 and look at the different shapes with your student.

Ask your student to draw a separate set of axes on squared paper for each shape and to draw the shape as it appears in the textbook, keeping the coordinates correct.

Then, reading the instructions, ask them to translate (move) each shape to its new position, draw it and write the new coordinates.
