Today's Lesson
Main Activity
New students should learn the 11 times table throughout the course of the week. Point out the pattern within this times table when multiplying single digit numbers by 11.
Call out a few simple fractions where the numerator can be reduced to one, and ask your child to simplify them. For example:
3/6, 2/10, 5/15
Do this today and every day for the following three days.
Turn to page 61 in Abacus 4 Textbook 1.
Watch Expanded Addition Methods - Recap (YouTube) and the 'Addition' video (which was introduced yesterday) to recap if needed.
Show your student the addition calculations and point out that although the calculations are written as number sentences in the textbook, when your student copies them onto the squared paper, they must set them out in column form. Stress the importance of keeping numbers in the correct place value columns, as not all the numbers are made up of four digits. Ask your student to copy and complete the page. Remind your student to carry over, if the answer to any column is greater than 9, writing the carry digit into the line that was missed when setting out the calculation. For example:
| 1000s | 100s | 10s | 1s | |
| 3 | 5 | 7 | 3 | |
| 4 | 3 | 7 | 7 | |
| + | 1 | 1 | ||
| 7 | 9 | 5 | 0 |
