Coordinates

Objectives

To identify specific points on a grid, to be able to follow instructions to draw specific points on a grid and to understand that coordinates are always expressed as (x,y).

Resources

Abacus 4 Textbook 3 | Thermometer | Squared paper

Today's Lesson

Main Activity

For the mental warm up, call out a few random subtractions which will take the answer into the negative numbers.

For example:

9 – 11 =

10 – 20 =Β

Draw a number line to help if your student finds this difficult to start with. A thermometer is a useful model to use when moving into negative numbers.

Turn to page 68 in Abacus 4 Textbook 3 and look at the diagrams with your student.

Ask them to tell you the coordinates of each shape. Watch 'Co-ordinates' as a reminder of plotting coordinates needed.

Remind your student that the x (horizontal) axis value is always given first, when working with coordinates, followed by the y (vertical) axis and that coordinates are written in the form (x,y).

Once your student has named the coordinates of each point in the example diagrams, ask them to draw a suitably sized set of axes on squared paper and then to mark the points provided in the book. They should then join the points up and name the 2D shape that they have drawn.
