To implement various mathematical strategies in order to find the perimeter of irregular shapes.
Resources
Abacus 4 Textbook 2 | Scanner or copier | Squared paper | Perimeter (YouTube)
Today's Lesson
Main Activity
For mental warm ups, ask your student to recite two or three of their times tables, for revision, saying them forwards and backwards!
Turn to page 75 in Abacus 4 Textbook 2.
Ask your student to remind you of the meaning of perimeter. Watch Perimeter (YouTube) if needed. Discuss how to find the perimeter of a rectangle: multiply each side by 2 and add the answers together.
This video will talk you through ideas and strategies to complete the 'Think' section.Β
Look at the shapes on the page. Ask your student to think up some strategies for finding the perimeters of the irregular shapes. Answers could include adding all of the different numbers together, or multiplying any numbers that are the same and then adding the final totals together.Β
Once your student has understood what to do, scan or copy the page and ask them to write the answers directly on the paper.
Then on squared paper, ask your student to complete the βThinkβ section.
