Main Activity

13a.pngAs mental warm ups for the rest of the week, continue to ask your student to recite two times tables each day and to answer random questions on these.

Turn to page 51 in Abacus 4 Textbook 3.

Look at the calculations at the top of the page and ask your student how they intend to work them out.

By rewording the questions, you can see that Q1 is asking 'How many 36s are there in 144?'

Your student could use repeated addition of 36 to see how many groups will give them the total of 144.

Draw attention to the division calculations and remind your student that this is the inverse of a multiplication calculation, and that multiplication can be used to work out division calculations.

Because of the larger numbers involved, the β€˜chunking’ method of multiplying by multiples of the divisor can be used. (Look back at the examples of chunking on P40 and 42 in Year 4 Textbook 2.)

Ask your student to copy and complete Questions 1 – 8.

The word problems are easier calculations, but remind your student to include the unit of measure and a word sentence answer.

Watch this video for some guidance on the first two word problems, to help get you started.
