Today's Lesson

Main Activity

Ask your student to recite two more times tables and to answer random questions on these.

Run through the activities on Rounding Numbers (MyMaths)

Turn to page 75 in Abacus 4 Textbook 1.

Further to the previous lesson, ask your student to round these 4-digit numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000.Β

Set it out as follows:

NumberNearest 10Nearest 100Nearest 1000
1287129013001000

If needed, watch the 'Rounding to the nearest 10,100 and 1000’ video (which was introduced yesterday) to recap.

Warn your student to take care by referring back to the original number and not to work from the rounded number. For example, 8448 rounds up to 8450 for the nearest 10, but it rounds down to 8400 for the nearest 100, as 48 is less than 50 so the original number needs to be rounded down. It is a common mistake for students to think that if the number is rounded up for the nearest 10, it will be rounded up again for the nearest 100. This will not necessarily always be true.

Ask your student to complete Q1 – 15. Before completing Q16 – 20, watch this video to understand the more challenging questions.
