To divide a 2 or 3-digit number by a 1-digit number by ‘chunking’.

To understand the connection between division and multiplication.

Main Activity

Turn to page 42 in Abacus 4 Textbook 2.

Your student should be quite comfortable with the chunking method of division by this stage. (Look back at the examples in Week 18, Lesson 3 and use Division with Chunking (YouTube) if needed).

Ask your student to use the method to complete the calculations on the page. Encourage your student to work independently, but stay nearby, in case they have questions to ask.

Challenge them by asking questions, such as Is that the biggest chunk of ___ you can subtract? Can you do that calculation with fewer steps?
