Main Activity
For the mental warm up, turn to page 79 in Abacus 4 Textbook 1. Using the frog method, ask your student to complete the page orally.
Turn to page 4 in Abacus 4 Textbook 2.
Watch 'Rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000' to recap rounding if required.
Before completing page 4, watch the ‘Place value’ video up to 10:26 to understand how to identify and round numbers on a number line.
After watching the video, ask your student to complete the rest of page 4 independently.
Now, watch the ‘Place value’ video from 10:27.
After watching the video, recap how to set out questions 3-12 using the instructions below and then ask your student to complete the rest of page 5 independently.
Draw attention to the rounding exercise at the bottom of page 5. Remind your student that it is the original number that is rounded; they should not round up to the nearest hundred from the number rounded to the nearest 10.
For example:
| To the nearest | 10 | 100 | 1000 |
| 9248 | 9250 | 9200 | 9000 |
It is a common error to round up to 9300 when rounding to the nearest hundred in this example, as the previous number is 9250. Point out that the number to be worked from each time is 9248.
