Today's Lesson
Main Activity
By now, new students should know the 5 times table. They should be able to recite all times tables from 2 to 6.
To start this lesson, your student will be finding half of two-digit odd numbers. To recap the work from the last lesson, call out a few two-digit numbers which have an even tens digit but an odd ones digit. E.g. 47.
Now, watch the ‘Halving odd numbers’ video to help demonstrate the strategy of partitioning when both digits are odd numbers.
Call out some two digit numbers where both digits are odd, for example, 37 or 15, and ask your student to divide the number by 2. Do this for about ten numbers. As with the previous session, remind your student to use their knowledge of partitioning and place value to do this, making a written jotting, if necessary, to keep track of the two parts of the answer before recombining.
Turn to page 35 in Abacus 4 Textbook 1.
Run through some examples of converting between analogue and digit time using Teaching Clock (TopMarks)
Look at the page with your student and ask them if they can explain it to you. Once you are happy that your student understands what to do, encourage them to work independently to complete the page.
