Abacus 4 Textbook 2 | Scanner or copier | Squared paper | Decimals on a Numberline (MyMaths)
Today's Lesson
Main Activity
As a mental warm up, ask your student some calendar-related questions. For example, if the first day of a month is a Tuesday, what date will the following Tuesday be on? Think up a few more such questions to ask your child.
Turn to pages 52 & 53 in Abacus 4 Textbook 2.
Copy or scan the pages, so that your student can write directly on the paper.
Look at the pages together. Point out the scale on the number lines and ask what your student thinks the number of each tag should be. Remind them that the tags are less than whole numbers. However, most of the tags will have one whole number on the left of the decimal point, then the number to the right of the decimal point is part of the whole number.
Run through the activities on Decimals on a Numberline (MyMaths)
Watch this video which talks you through some examples on page 52 and 53.
Once your student has understood the concept, ask them to write the values of each tag on the number lines. Check to see that your student is able to complete the questions about drawing and labelling separate number lines and working with the sequence of numbers with decimals.
