Main Activity
For the mental warm up, ask your student to count from zero to 400 in 25s.ย ย
Stress the importance of learning this pattern by rote, as you are working with quarters of 100 - a frequently occurring pattern in maths.
Turn to page 58 in Abacus 4 Textbook 3 and discuss the example with your student. Ask them to try to explain it to you.
This is a method that has been covered several times before.
Ask your student to explain how the expanded method works โ this is to show the place value of each digit. It is not necessary for your student to write out the calculations using the expanded method at this stage. They should use the compacted method ย Compact Column Addition (YouTube)
It is very important to give each digit its own square on the paper when working out the calculations.
Ask your student to copy and complete the calculations on the page. Remind them of the importance of carrying, when the addition of any column of digits results in an answer of 10 or more.
