Today's Lesson

Main Activity

Ask your student to complete page 94 in Abacus 4 Textbook 1 orally, as the mental warm up for the lesson.

Turn to page 20 in Abacus 4 Textbook 2.

Discuss the example at the top of the page. Draw attention to the fact that £4.23 has been changed to £4 + 20p + 3p. Tell your student to ignore the decimal points whilst the calculations are being completed, but the decima

l point must be placed 2 digits from the right when writing the answer, as we are working with money.

In the example, our answer would be £16 + 80p + 12p = £16.92

Using real money may be useful for some students, particularly when multiplying multiples of 10p that cross into £s, e.g. 6 x 30p: recognize that 6 x 30p = 180p and that this is the same as £1 + 80p.

Using the grid method, ask your student to copy and complete the multiplication calculations on the page.

Once you feel that your student is comfortable with the work required, encourage them to work independently.
