Today's Lesson

Main Activity

As a mental warm up, call out a few random numbers to be divided or multiplied by 10 or 100.

For example:

30 x 10 =, 500 Γ· 100 =, 67 x 100 =

Turn to page 59 in Abacus 4 Textbook 2.

Look at the expanded method of column addition together. Remind your student that this is shown to make the place value clear. If your student is able to work without partitioning to expand the numbers, allow them to do so. Remind your student that when an answer in a column is greater than 9, a 1 digit must be carried forward to the next column on the left.

Watch Expanded Addition Methods - recap (YouTube) and Compact Column Addition (YouTube)Β if needed.

Ask your student to copy and complete the calculations on page 59 and 60. Stress the importance of placing each digit in its own column, according to its value.Β  Remind your student to leave a line below the digits of the calculation (above the answer) for any carry digits.
