Main Activity

Ask your child to complete the calculations on page 92 of Abacus 4 Textbook. Draw attention to the different operation symbols.

Turn to page 18 in Abacus 4 Textbook 2.

Watch Ladder Method (YouTube) and look at the example at the top of the page and talk about this with your student. Stress the importance of place value. Talk about the links between the grid method for multiplication and the new ‘ladder’ method. Say that as with addition and subtraction, a vertical method like this is often the most efficient way to multiply numbers. Once your student is comfortable with the concept, ask them to copy and complete the multiplication calculations on the page.
