Abacus 4 Textbook 3 | Copier

Today's Lesson

Main Activity

At the beginning of this and the next two lessons, call out a few whole numbers and ask your student to break them down into various fractions.

For example:

45 - break it down into ninths.

Answer:1/9 of 45 = 52/9 = 103/9 = 154/9 = 20 and so on.

Β Turn to page 38 in Abacus 4 Textbook 3 and look at the number lines with your child.

Ask them to establish the scale of each line: what the larger and smaller divisions on the lines represent.

Either copy the page, or ask your student to write directly in the textbook.

Once your student has established the first measurement in m and cm, show how this is to be written in the top box.

Then, convert this measurement to cm and this is written in the bottom box.

For example:

3m15cm in the top and 3.15m in the bottom. Discuss with your student that this is also 315cm as there are 100cm in every 1m.

Once your student has understood the concept, encourage them to work independently.

Draw attention to the fact that each line has a different start and finish number, although the scale for all of them is the same.
