Today's Lesson

Main Activity

Follow the same mental exercise as for the previous lesson, calling out equivalent fractions with a numerator greater than one for your student to reduce.

Turn to page 66 in Abacus 4 Textbook 1.

Look at the scales in Q1 – 6. Once your student is able to work out what each is divided into, ask them to write the weights in 3 different ways – showing their answers in grams, kilograms (using fractions) and kilograms with a decimal.  E.g. 1500g, 1½kg or 1.5kg

Before attempting Q7 – 12, watch the ‘Mass problems’ video.

Once this has been done, ask your student to write true or false by each statement and show their working out. Tip: Encourage them to convert both amounts into the same unit of measure. (E.g. Convert them both into kg or both into g, as this makes them easier to compare.)
