Subtraction With Decimals
Objectives
To subtract using the column method and to realise that decimal points do not affect how the calculation is carried out.

Main Activity
For the mental warm up, find an atlas or road map with grid references marked on it. Select a town or place, then give your student the name of the place and the grid reference, giving the x-axis reference first.
Ask your student to find the place on the map.
Turn to page 67 in Abacus 4 Textbook 3.
Ask your student to read out the questions to you and to establish which mathematical operation is required.
Once they have established this, ask your student to complete the calculations, keeping point under point for the decimals.
Remind your student to include all units of measure – in this case, £s (pounds) and to include a word sentence answer with the number answer.
