Today's Lesson
Main Activity
Call out a few random three-digit numbers and ask your student to round them to the nearest 10 and nearest 100.
Turn to page 31 in Abacus 4 Textbook 1.
Watch Grid Method Multiplication (YouTube) to recap if needed.
Further to the previous lesson, ask your student to copy and complete the calculations on the page.Β It is suggested that your student estimates their answers first.Β This is an important skill that is often used in real-life maths and should not be overlooked.
The answer to the first question (87 x 3) could be estimated by rounding 87 to the nearest 10, then multiplying by 3, giving 90 x 3 = 270.Β Your student will now be expecting an answer close to but less than 270.Β
Look at the grid at the bottom and ask your student what possible numbers could go into the grid, in order to give the results written.
