Perimeter

Objectives

To calculate perimeters of shapes.

Resources

Abacus 4 Textbook 2 | Squared paper

Today's Lesson

Main Activity

As a mental warm up, ask your student to recite two times tables and then ask them some questions from these, involving both multiplication and division.

For example:

Recite the 8 times table.

7 x 8 =; 12 x 8 =; 40 Γ· 8 =; 88 Γ· 8 =, how many 8s in 48…

Turn to page 77 in Abacus 4 Textbook 2.

Look at the page with your student and ask them to think of some possible ways or strategies that could be used to work out the missing measurements, using the measurements that have been provided. Some students might benefit from redrawing the shapes to scale on squared paper.

Once you feel that your student has understood how to work these out, scan or copy the page, so that your student can write directly on the paper. Remind them to also calculate the perimeters, once the missing measurement has been worked out.

Once your student has completed the page, ask them to have a go at the β€˜Think’ question on squared paper.

If your student tackles this confidently, you might like to suggest that sides do not have to a whole number of centimetres, to include halves too.
