Today's Lesson
Main Activity
For the mental warm-up turn to page 82 in Abacus 4 Textbook 2. Ask your student to complete the subtractions using the counting up Frog method.
Following the work on the place value of four digit numbers completed during the previous two lessons, turn to page 8 in Abacus 4 Textbook 3.
Look at the numbers on the page with your student. Point out that the fifth digit means ‘ten thousands’, as opposed to the single thousands represented by the fourth digit. The small gap makes it easier to read the number. A comma is frequently used instead of a space.
This video focuses on Questions 7-10 of page 8, to offer some extra support and challenge.
Once you feel that your student is comfortable with five digit numbers, ask them to copy and complete pages 8 and 9 on squared paper in exactly the same way as they did for the previous two lessons.
