Today's Lesson

Main Activity

Turn to page 82 in Abacus 4 Textbook 1 and ask your student to complete the subtractions orally, as the mental warm up.

Turn to page 8 in Abacus 4 Textbook 2.

Watch Adding multiples of 10 to 4 digit numbers (YouTube)

Look at the addition sums with your student. Ask them to talk about how to go about the calculations. If necessary, point out the zeros at the end of each number to be added. Ask your student to establish whether the number digit that is not a zero is a ten or a hundred and to find the corresponding digit in the larger number. The only thing that will change is that digit and possibly the digit immediately to the left, if the answer breaks the tens barrier. The digits to the right of the added number will not change, as they only have zeros to add to them.

Ask your student to complete the questions on page 8.
