Today's Lesson
Main Activity
To start this lesson, your student will recap finding half of two-digit numbers. Call out a few even two-digit numbers which also have an even tens digit.
Now, watch the ‘Halving odd numbers’ video to understand what to do when the ones digit is odd.
Call out a few two digit numbers that start with an even number, but end with an odd number, for example, 25 or 61. Ask your student to halve the number. Do this for about ten numbers. Remind your student to use their knowledge of place value to do this, halving the number of tens and then the ones. Use a number line as a visual aid if necessary to find half of the odd ones digit, asking e.g., What number is halfway between zero and 5?
Turn to page 34 in Abacus 4 Textbook 1.
Run through the activities on Setting the Time (MyMaths)
For the top section, provide spare paper and a suitable sized cylinder for your student to draw clock faces. Point out that time does not advance in multiples of 5 minutes, and that there are individual minutes in between the neat 5 minute marks. Remind your student that there must be a clear distinction between the two clock hands. The second half of the page can be written directly on to the copied paper. Remind your student that in analogue time, the minutes are said first. In digital time, it is the hour that is said first.
Ask your student to complete the page.
