Main Activity

Call out a random two-digit number and ask your student to count backwards in tens from that number to zero, or as close to zero as they can get.  

Call out a three-digit number and ask your student to count backwards in tens until the hundreds barrier is broken. Do this for about ten numbers.

Turn to page 37 in Abacus 4 Textbook 1.

Look at the timetable with your student. Refer to the previous lesson and how we worked out the number of minutes between two times. Using the television timetable and the analogue clock face, turn the hands through the times shown.  

Recap Frog Method to calculate time intervals using Time Calculations (MyMaths) from the last lesson.

Remind your student of the jumping frog and how he hops first to the ‘o’clock’ time, note down the minutes this took, then he jumps to the new time, and we note down how many minutes are in this hop. Finally, add the two hops’ minutes together and that amounts to the length of time the TV show takes.

Watch the video ‘Calculating time intervals’ (which was introduced in the last lesson) from 4:35 to understand how to answer the questions on P37.

Once your student is comfortable with the concept and can calculate how many minutes some of the programmes are, ask them to fill in the information required from Questions 1 – 6. Ask your student to discuss various possibilities for the ‘Think’ section.
