Today's Lesson

Introduction

Ask your student to think about the addition and subtraction learning they have been doing over the past few lessons.

Refer back to the 📄 Addition Towers investigation from Lesson 4 this step.

Explain to your student that today they are going to become a game inventor, and to think of ideas for at least one game that could be played in order to practise addition and subtraction skills.

Their game does not have to be complicated, as often simple ideas are more effective in games.

The following criteria must be met when planning their game:

  • Their game must be fun to play (and to make!)
  • Their game must challenge each player who plays it to practise their addition and subtraction skills learnt over the past few lessons.

Main Activity

6a.pngHelp your student to plan and make their game. They may find ideas difficult at first. Here are some to get them started with their thinking, if needed:

  • A simple board game for two players where players move around the squares, landing on an addition or subtraction question
  • A ‘Snap!’ type game, where answers are matched with questions
  • A ‘ladder’ or ‘track’ game where players must move up squares on a track to reach the top, answering questions on the way
  • A game similar to or based on ‘Addition Towers’.

Encourage your student to play their game with you and with others, once complete!
