Today's Lesson
Introduction
Show your student the picture of the triangles on Sheet 1 of the π Shape pictures.
Say:
- One person says this picture has 2 triangles, and another person says that she can see 3! What do you think?
Ask your student to talk to you about their thoughts.
Use one coloured pen to draw over the outline of the triangle on the left, a different coloured pen to draw round the triangle on the right, and then a third colour to draw round the whole larger triangle. So, there are 3 triangles!
Repeat with the picture of squares, asking your student to draw over a square, using a different coloured pen each time.
Observe how the triangles and squares are different sizes, and that some have triangles or squares inside them.
Repeat with the triangles and squares from Sheet 2.
This video talks through looking carefully for the hidden shapes within larger shapes.
Main Activity
Give your student a copy of the π Tangram pieces.
Challenge your student to use all seven pieces to make the following shapes:
- a triangle
- a square
- an oblong
- two different pentagons
- at least two different hexagons
- three 4-sided shapes (non-rectangular).
