Today's Lesson

What to Get Ready

The following lessons are based on British currency. You may wish to teach your student about your local currency alongside these lessons. Please note, however, that the assignments will assess their understanding of money using British pence (p).

It is always preferable for children to learn using real coins. However, if you do not have access to British coins, print out the resource πŸ“„ British Coins. You can then cut out pictures of the coins you need.

Introduction

Before you start the lesson, watch this Recap Video with your student.

Work as a pair with your student.

Give your student a pot containing two 10p coins and 9 pennies in. You should keep the other one.

Ask your student to divide a piece of paper in half.

Say, β€˜Place a 10p coin on your side of the paper. What is double 10p?’

Add a 10p coin to your side of the paper for them to see, and encourage them to find the answer of 20p.

Cover half the money. Then ask, β€˜What is half of 20p?’

Both of you should then place 11p on their side of the paper.

Ask, β€˜What is double 11p? And so what is half of 22p?’

Ask your student to show you double 12p, to say the double and then the half.

Show this on a bar model to reinforce the concept:

Half of 24p is 12p. Double 12p is 24p.

24p
12p12p

Continue with the coins to show double 13p, double 14p…  up to double 20p.

Extra Challenge

Ask your student to investigate which amounts of money from 10p to at least 30p can be shared equally (halved) between two people, using coins to help.

They should list the amounts they can halve.

Workbook

To help your student build upon their learning from today, please ask them to complete the activities on page 15 of Abacus Workbook 1.
