Today's Lesson

What to Get Ready

7b.pngThe following lessons are based on British currency. You may wish to teach your student about your local currency alongside these lessons. Please note, however, that the assignments will assess their understanding of money using British pence (p).

If you do not have access to British coins, print out the πŸ“„ British Coins document which you can find in the General Resources. You can then cut out pictures of the coins you need.

Prepare some price tags for a β€˜shop’ as follows:

Some pens costing 50p, 60p, 70p and 80p; some pencils costing 10p, 11p and 20p.

Introduction

Show your student the priced pens and pencils. Ask them to choose a pen and a pencil to buy from the β€˜shop’.

Ask, β€˜How can we find the total? What’s a good way to add 10p? Do we need to count on in ones?’

Remind your student of how they can add 10 and 11. Locate the first price on a 0-100 Beaded line, and then add 10 and another 1.

Repeat with other pairs of items, showing addition of 20 by adding two 10s.

Also use coins to show the first price, and show adding 10p, 11p and 20p by adding 10p and 1p coins. This will help to develop your student's understanding of place value.

This video demonstrates using the beaded line to help with addition of 10p, 11p and 20p.

Say, β€˜All the pens in the shop are in the sale! They are all going to be reduced by 20p.’

Choose a few items and discuss how to subtract 20p from the price, showing this on a 0-100 Beaded line and by making the amount using 10p and 1p coins. Remove two of the 10p coins to show the 20p reduction.

Main Activity

Your student should choose one item from each shelf on the πŸ“„ Finding totals, reducing prices worksheet.

They should then choose coins to show both amounts, and then find the total, using the 0-100 Beaded line to help.

They should record their answers in a number sentence.

For example: 45p + 10p = 55p. Repeat with different pairs of items.

Ask them to choose five items from the top shelf to reduce by 20p, recording these with a subtraction number sentence.

For example: 72p – 20p = 52p.

Write the new price alongside the old one.

Workbook

To help your student consolidate their learning from today, please ask them to complete the activities on pages 34 and 35 of Abacus Workbook 1.
