Today's Lesson
Introduction
Explain that rather than counting 100g weights to weigh things, we can put items into the pan of the weighing scales and read off the dial like when we made fruity flapjack.
Play the Mostly Postie game, choosing answers in steps of 50g.
PLAY - Mostly Postie (ICTGames)
Ask your student to discuss with you what the small marks between 100s of grams might mean.
Ask, βWhat number is halfway between 0 and 100? So, what number do you think might be halfway between 100 and 200?β
Support your student to work out what the remaining marks represent. Count round the dial in steps of 50g.
Drag the parcel to the pan, and together read the scale. Repeat.
Next, show your student the grapefruit and a 100g weight. Ask them to estimate the weight of the grapefruit.
Place it in the scales and ask them to help you read the weight to the nearest 100g.
Repeat with a book weighing 300g or 400g.
Main Activity
Watch this video which demonstrates some points to look out for when reading measuring scales.
Give your student the scales (with 100g intervals) and a range of items weighing between 100g and 1kg.
Ask your student to weigh the items to the nearest 100g.
They should record their results in a table and write two sentences about what it tells them.
For example:
- The potato is lighter than the cauliflower.
- Three potatoes weigh the same as the broccoli head.
Workbook
To help your student to build upon their learning from today, please ask them to complete the activities on page 15 of Abacus Workbook 3.
