Today's Lesson

Main Activity 1

Show the 📄 Avoid the 10s game board.

Place a counter the size of one of the spots on one of the numbers on the board. Record this number at the side.

Ask your student to move the counter along a line to a number above, below, left or right. They add this number to the previous number. Record the number they landed on under yours, and the total at the side.

You then move the counter to another number, adding the number to the running total, asking your student to check your addition.

Record both the number you landed on and the new total on the board, e.g. starting at the 5 in the left hand column as in this exam

ple:

Numbers     Total

    5

    4                  9

   6                15

Ask your student to move the counter and add the number to the running total. Record this.

You then move the counter to another number.

Continue taking turns, alternating between you moving a counter and your student, but explain that you are trying to get a total which is a multiple of 10. They must try to stop you!

So, when it is your student's turn, they must decide where to move the counter to try to stop you making a multiple of 10 on your next move.

If your student gets a total > (greater than) 50 without you making a total of a multiple of 10, they have won. But if you make 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 first, then you have won!

Main Activity 2

Play 📄 Avoid the 10s again, but this time starting at 100 and subtracting numbers you land on.

If you get an answer of 90, 80, 70, 60 or 50 you win, but if your student passes 50 without you doing so, they win.

Main Activity 3

Your student should play 📄 Spot On with you.

Take it in turns to move the counter, recording the chain of numbers and running totals on paper.

Instead of avoiding 10s, aim to make a total ‘Spot On’ 50. Whichever player makes a total of 50 first wins that game.
