What to Get Ready
Gather together the ingredients and equipment needed to make the Fruity Flapjacks. Preheat the oven to 180Β°C.
Main Activity
The focus of this activity is for your student to see weights in action. They should be encouraged to weigh the ingredients independently.
Draw your student's attention to the need to be precise when baking, and that their measurements of ingredients should be as accurate as possible.
- Help your student to weigh the sugar and butter by adding them one at a time to kitchen scales. Challenge them to read the dial or digital reading.
- Melt the butter and sugar together gently in a saucepan and add the golden syrup whilst your stduent weighs the oats.
- Turn off the heat and add the oats to the pan, mix together with a wooden spoon.
- Ask your student to weigh the dried fruit and then add this to the pan (still off the heat), stirring all the ingredients together with adult supervision.
- Grease a shallow tin, tip in the mixture and press down lightly.
- Cook in a preheated oven (180Β°C) for about 15 minutes or until golden.
- Divide into squares whilst still warm.
