Assignment

What to Get Ready

Draw a 7 x 5 array on A4 paper (a larger version of the one below):

Seven by five array with a dot in each square

Introduction

Show your student seven 5p coins and ask, ‘How much money have I got here? How can I find out?’

Count in 5s to find the total.

Ask: ‘What number sentence can we write?’

Write: 5p + 5p + 5p + 5p + 5p + 5p + 5p = 35p.

Say: ‘Gosh, what a long number sentence!’

Explain that there is a quicker way to write this: 7 x 5p = 35p.

Read this as ‘seven lots of 5p’ or ‘seven 5s’. Point out that we can also say, ‘7 times 5’. This means we have seven 5p coins, which is 35p altogether.

Record 7 lots of 5p = 35p, explaining that this is another way of writing it.

Show the array of 7 x 5 - drawing around the groups of 5 - to emphasise this point.

Repeat with the process with eight 5p coins.

Say that they can count in 5s to find the number needed, but gradually they will learn and remember what four 5s are just like they know what 6 add 4 is, and so this will be quicker than adding 5 lots of times. This is learning the five times table.

Main Activity

Ask your student to complete Assignment 8 by ‘buying’ each of the items from the 5p shop.

Encourage them to count in 5s, or to start to recall the facts of the 5x table.

For example, ‘If I’m buying 3 of those, it’s 3 x 5p which is 15p.’

Note: Once the assignment has been completed, please submit it to your student's Wolsey Hall tutor.
