Today's Lesson
Introduction
Before you start the lesson, watch this Recap Video with your student.
Ask your student to ring 68 on the 100 square.
Ask, βWhatβs the next multiple of 10?β
Ask, βHow much do we need to count up from 68 to reach 70?β
Ask your student to mark 68 on the 0-100 beaded line and to ring the next multiple of 10.
Ask, βHow many beads do we add to 68 to make 70?β
Draw a hop from after the 68th bead to 70, and label it β+2β.
Ask, βWhat number sentence can we write?β
Repeat, this time recording numbers and hops on a landmarked line.
Your student will now need to be able to work out what to add to 68, rather than counting the beads.
Main Activity
Your student should choose the 100 square or the 0-100 beaded line.
Ask your student to roll two 1-10 dice to make a 2-digit number. (If they roll a 10, they should roll again.)
They should then either:
- label that number on their 0-100 beaded line and draw a hop to show what needs to be added to make the next multiple of 10
or:
- ring the number on the 100 square, ring the next multiple of 10 and work out how much needs to be added.
Whichever image they use, they should record the number sentence.
For example:
67 + 3 = 70
Extra Challenge
Use the 1-100 landmarked line instead of the 1-100 bead string or 0-100 beaded line for the activity above.
Workbook
To help your student consolidate their learning from today, please ask them to complete the activities on pages 15 and 16 of Abacus Workbook 2.
