Today's Lesson

Introduction

Before you start the lesson, watch this Recap Video with your student.

Remind your student of the two strategies for working out subtractions that you explored in Lesson Three.

Using πŸ“„ 0-9 number cards as you did in Lesson 2, ask your student to decide which strategy to use to find the difference between the smaller number and the larger number.

Discuss. Model finding the answer using Maths Frog to count up to find the difference and using counting back.

Ask:

  • Which do you think was more efficient in this example?

Repeat with new numbers.

Ask your student to share their methods for finding the difference and to explain why they used the method they chose.

Main Activity

Ask your student to complete the πŸ“„ Count up or count back subtractions, using the πŸ“„ 100 square, Spider and Fly for support if needed.

They should also be able to access πŸ“„ 1-100 landmarked linesΒ for support as needed, if they wish.

Workbook

To help your student consolidate their learning from today, please ask them to complete the activities on page 40 of Abacus Workbook 3.
