Today's Lesson

Introduction

Before you start the lesson, watch this Recap Video with your student.

Remind your student of the two methods for adding which you revised in the previous lesson.

Write the calculation 31 + 46 on the board and ask them to think and share how to solve this.

Model swapping the numbers over (as you can add in any order) and then counting on 30 and another 1 to find the answer.

Place the two sets of πŸ“„ 0-9 number cards face down and spread out on the table.

Ask your student to pick four cards to create two 2-digit numbers. If a β€˜0’ is picked, place it as a second digit, not a first.

Ask your student to work with you to decide which method to use to add the two numbers together.

Look for examples where changing the order of the question or using number bonds helps.

Remind your student that when the ones add to 10 or more, they have to remember to add the extra 10.

Constantly discuss the most effective methods for adding.

Main Activity

Ask your student to complete the πŸ“„ Additions sheet, declaring the method they have used each time.
