Today's Lesson

Introduction

Before you start the lesson, watch this Recap Video with your student.

Show your student the 📄 0–50 beaded line.

Ask your student to think about counting in 5s as you write 4 × 5 = ____ down on paper or on the board.

Explain that we can read this as 4 lots of 5, or 4 times 5.

Ask your student to ring groups of 5 beads on one of the lines, until they have ringed 4 groups.

Say:

  • This is 4 lots of 5 beads.

Ask:

  • How many beads is this altogether?

Count up in 5s to s

how that 4 × 5 = 20.

Repeat, this time drawing hops rather than ringing groups in order to find the answers to:

3 × 5 =

6 × 5 =

10 × 5 =

Main Activity

Using the 📄 Multiply by 5 sheet, ask your student to roll a 1–10 dice to generate a times 5 number sentence to solve.

For example, if they roll a 6 they would write 6 × 5 =.

They should write the number sentence above the beaded line on the sheet, and then draw the appropriate number of hops of 5 to find the answer.

Ask your student to roll the dice again and repeat.

Show your student how to count up in multiples on their fingers to work out the multiplications,

For example, for 3 × 5, hold up a finger for each multiple of 5, saying, ‘5, 10, 15. So, three 5s are 15.’

Your student should then complete some more using this method, as time allows.

Extra Challenge

Continue the above task without the beaded lines for support, encouraging your student to count in 5s in their head.
