Today's Lesson

Introduction

Before you start the lesson, watch this Recap Video with your student.

To keep mental recall of times tables facts fresh, ask your student to access Hit the Button.

ACCESS - Hit the Button (TopMarks)

Challenge your student to play each of these times tables twice through, beating their score on the 2nd go.

Recap on the lessons so far this step on telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes. Use an interactive clock to do some quick-fire recap such as:

  • Show me 1 o’clock
  • Show me 5 o’clock
  • Show me 7 o’clock

Then:

  • Show me half past 6
  • Show me half past 12
  • Show me half past 9

Then:

  • Show me quarter past 11; quarter to 11
  • Show me quarter past 1; quarter to 1
  • Show me quarter past 4; quarter to 4

If needed, show some of these times to your student and read them together, before asking them to make them and to show you.

Lead into 5-minute interval times, counting round the clock in 5s. Point to a number, e.g. 4 and ask: How many minutes past is this? Count round in 5s from the 12 to the 4 if needed, to establish that it is 20 past.

Repeat this with other minutes past such as 5 (25 past); 2 (10 past)

Main Activity

Access 📄 Time to the nearest 5 minutes and look through the first sheet only. Ask your student to read through the problem at the top and to complete as many clocks as they can by themselves. They should use the interactive or teaching clock to help them as needed.

When completed, look through their responses.

They may have found some of the ‘to’ times harder, so work with your student on these as necessary, using the interactive or teaching clock.

Extra Challenge

Using two sets of differently coloured counters (2 colours), play a game where one player points to a completed time on the sheet, and challenges the other player to say the time that is (depending on the understanding of your student) either 5 minutes later; 5 minutes earlier; 10 minutes later or 10 minutes earlier.

If the challenged player is correct, they can put one of their counters on that clock.

Repeat.

Workbook

To help your student to build upon their learning from today, please ask them to complete the activities on page 47 of Abacus Workbook 2.
