Today's Lesson

What to Get Ready

Cut out the πŸ“„ Place value arrow cards (ask your student to help you with this).

Introduction

Using the cut out πŸ“„ Place value arrow cards, create the number 124 by selecting the 100 the 20 and the 4. Put these three cards together to create the number.

Say:

  • Look at how the 20 covers the zeros in 100 to show that we have 2 tens, and then the 4 covers the zero in the 20 to show we have 4 ones.

Put all the 100s in order from 100 to 900 on the floor in front of you. Count along them together. Now lay out the tens and then the ones cards in order.2

Ask:

  • Can you find the cards for 100, 30 and 5 to make the number one hundred and thirty-five?
  • Now put them back in their place in the order.

Repeat with lots of other 3-digit numbers until your student is familiar with using the cards.

Say:

  • Show me 427.
  • What multiple of 100 did you use?
  • And what multiple of 10?
  • And which ones number?

Record the place value addition: 400 + 20 + 7 = 427.

Repeat, modelling recording other 3-digit place value additions. Then ask your student to make the number using the cards, and then to write the place value addition.

Launch the Interactive Place Value and use the toggles to show 888 using cards.

ACCESS - Interactive Place Value (Mathsframe)

Drag the cards apart to show how this number is made and then click on each card to show the actual number of counters represented by each of the 8s.

Note how much bigger the 800 is than the 80 or 8.

Repeat with some other 3-digit numbers, for example, 456 and 654.

Watch this video which uses the interactive place value cards on MathsFrame to help demonstrate how we see the value of each digit.

Main Activity

Shuffle the 100s, 10s and 1s cards and then place them into three piles of 100s, 10s and 1s.

Ask your student to take one card from each pile to make a 3-digit number and write the corresponding addition into the boxes on πŸ“„ Place value addition.

Workbook

To help your student consolidate their learning from today, please ask them to complete the activities on pages 46 and 47 of Abacus Workbook 3.
