Today's Lesson

Introduction

Before you start the lesson, watch this Recap Video with your student.

Please note: There is intentionally little by the way of โ€˜Introductionsโ€™ in the following two lessons, as the emphasis is on working on the main activities.

Explain to your student that the next two lessons will help them to talk about their maths.

Explain that it is important that we try to give reasons for what we think answers might be, as this will help us to get better at understanding maths.

Explain that this can be tricky at first but, the more we try to practise it, the easier it will seem.

Access the ๐Ÿ“„ Problem solving activities.

Main Activity

5a.pngWork through the ๐Ÿ“„ Problem solving activities with your student over the next two lessons.

As you work with them, encourage them to talk as much as possible about their answers, giving reasons when they can.

The best questions to ask your student will start with, โ€˜Why do you think that?โ€™ or, โ€˜How do you know?โ€™

If your student finds it particularly challenging to talk about their answers, model or show them how to explain their thinking by pretending that you are them, attempting to answer the questions.
