Today's Lesson

What to Get Ready

Today we are using a bar model. If you are not familiar with bar models, you may like to watch the Bar modelling explanation video. You only need to watch up to 1 minute 14 seconds.

Your student may also find this useful to watch, or you can demonstrate to them how the bar model idea works before today’s lesson begins.

Introduction

04 no hat.jpgWrite this word problem down for your student to see:

Laura has 20p. She spends 15p on an apple in the school tuck shop. How much money does she have left?

Your student should then discuss this problem with you to decide how it could be solved.

Draw a bar model to represent the problem:

20p
15p?

Ask your student to suggest the missing number sentence we can write. Agree that to solve the problem, we would count up from 15p to 20p, so the number sentence would be 15p + β–‘ = 20p.

Ask your student to solve the problem by counting up.

Then write this problem:

Chang buys a cheese triangle for 10p and a tomato for 8p. How much does he need to pay?

10p + 8p = β–‘

Which coins would Chang need to pay the exact amount? How much change would there be from 20p?

?
10p8p

Make a list of other items that might be for sale in a healthy snack bar, together with their prices.

With your student, make up other number stories finding a total or change up to 20p, drawing bar models and recording number sentences for each.

This video demonstrates using bar models to help with adding and subtracting.

Main Activity

Show your student the sheet πŸ“„ Bar Models and complete it together.Β

Then ask your student to complete the challenge set in πŸ“„ Bar Models 2.

Extra Challenge

4b.pngYour student can set a Bar model challenge for you or someone else in class to complete. They can give you a number and ask you to write the bar model example. They may wish to create a bar model story to accompany the challenge too.
