Today's Lesson
What to Get Ready
Print the Spinners onto card if possible and cut them out. Follow the instructions on the resource to make the spinners.
Introduction
Show the 📄 0–30 beaded line.
Ask your student to think about counting in 2s as you write 4 × 2 = ____.
Ask your student to suggest how we might read this. Explain that we can read this as 4 lots of 2, or 4 times 2.
Ask your student to ring groups of 2 beads, until they have ringed 4 groups (4 lots of 2 beads).
Ask:
- How many beads is this altogether?
Count up in 2s to show that 4 × 2 = 8.
Repeat, using hops along the beaded line to work out:
8 × 2 =
3 × 10 =
5 × 5 =
Watch this video and see how the jumps along the number line help us count in 2s, 5s or 10s.
Main Activity
Give your student the two prepared 📄 Spinners to generate times 2, times 5 or times 10 multiplications.
Challenge them to find the answer by drawing hops on the 📄 Beaded lines****task or counting up in 2s, 5s or 10s on their fingers.
Extra Challenge
Challenge your student to keep track of the number of hops on their fingers, while counting in steps of 2, 5 or 10 in their heads.
Workbook
To help your student consolidate their learning from today, please ask them to complete the activities on pages 53 and 55 of Abacus Workbook 2.
