The game challenges your student to work with number and to solve a problem

Main Activity

Explain and play the Double or halve? game with your student.

PLAY - Double or halve? problem (Maths.org)

It may take a few times playing the game for your student to get used to the rules and what they can and can’t do.

Encourage your student to be resilient with the game, to not give up, and to persevere with seeing it through to the end.

Encourage your student to play the game several times with you, so that they see there is more than one way of winning.

Ask questions throughout the game such as:

  • How do you know?
  • Can you use your doubling skills?
  • Can you use your halving skills?

This video introduces an interactive doubles and halving matching activity, and some word problems which will help your student apply their doubling and halving skills.

Workbook

To help your student build upon on their learning from today, please ask them to complete the activities on page 20 of Abacus Workbook 3.
