Today's Lesson

Introduction

Before you start the lesson, watch this Recap Video with your student.

Write: \frac{1}{2} of □ = □

Ask your student to think, and then discuss with you what numbers could complete this number sentence.

Take and test their ideas, using counters to demonstrate, checking that the numbers suggested do work.

Emphasise that it is OK if the suggestions do not work as we are experimenting with numbers.

Display: \frac{1}{2} of 5 = 10.

Ask:

  • Is this correct?

Reason that the number in the first box should be double the number in the second box.

Repeat with \frac{1}{4} of □ = □

Take your student's suggestions, writing them down. Test them out using counters.

Point out how the number in the first box is 4 times the number in the second box.

Then display \frac{1}{3} of 12 = 6. Is this correct?

Now write your own numbers to accurately fill the boxes:

\frac{1}{3} of □ = □

Main Activity

Play 📄 Card fractions, finding numbers to complete fraction number sentences. Play against each other.

Use the number cards 1 to 12 from the 📄 0-20 number cards.

Once confident, extend play by including numbers to 20 or 30 in their set of cards.

Workbook

To help your student consolidate their learning from today, please ask them to complete the activities on page 24 of Abacus Workbook 3.
