What to Get Ready

For the Extra Challenge, enlarge the πŸ“„ 0-1000 landmarked line to A3 if possible.

Main Activity 1

Shuffle a set of πŸ“„ 1 to 9 digit cards. Take two and ask your student to use them in that order to mark a 2-digit number on the

πŸ“„ 0-100 landmarked line.

Repeat with another two cards so you have two 2-digit numbers labelled on the line.

Your student should then shuffle a set of 1 to 9 digit cards, and take two. Can they use these to make a number between your pair of numbers? If so, they score a point. If not, you score a point.

Repeat 9 more times.

Who has scored more than 5?

Main Activity 2

Play Inbetweenies.

Player 1 shuffles 1-9 digit cards, places them face-down then takes the top 4 cards to make two 2-digit numbers, marking them on the πŸ“„ 0-100 landmarked line. They can use the 4 digits in whatever order they like.

Player 2 takes the next 2 cards and uses them to try to make a number between the numbers on the line. If they can do so, Player 2 wins a point. If not, Player 1 wins the point.

Repeat, swapping roles for each game.

Discuss what strategies we learned as we played the game, e.g. to try to make a pair of numbers as close together as possible!

Extra Challenge

Show the enlarged πŸ“„ 0-1000 landmarked line.

Work as two players.

Player 1 shuffles the 1-9 digit cards, place face down and takes the top 6. They use these to create a pair of 3-digit numbers to mark on the line. They can use the digits in any order.

Player 2 looks at the 3 remaining cards to see whether there are three which will make a 3-digit number which lies between the pair of numbers made by Player 1.

If so, Player 2 wins a point, if not, Player 1 wins a point.

Repeat, swapping roles.

Discuss what strategies your student used as they played the game, e.g. to try to make a pair of numbers as close together as possible!
