Today's Lesson
What to Get Ready
Write out the following additions:
7 + 7, 10 + 6, 9 + 3, 6 + 4, 15 + 5, 4 + 7, 18 + 5, and 20 + 7.
Introduction
Show your student the additions that you have prepared.
Say: βWe could work out all of these answers by counting on, but some might be easier to solve using facts we have learned. Can you see any?β
Ask your student to circle in one colour number facts that they know without having to work them out.
Explain that we can also find the answers to some by using place value, putting multiples of 10 and 1 together, such as 10 + 6.
Ask: βCan you see others?β
Ask them to circle in another colour the additions they can do using place value.
Now sort the additions into two groups: those that they would choose to solve by counting on (fore example, 9 + 3, 4 + 7, 18 + 5); and those that they would choose to solve by using place value/number facts (for example, 7 + 7, 10 + 6, 6 + 4, 15 + 5, 20 + 7).
This video talks through how to sort these additions depending on these strategies used.
Main Activity
Give your student π Using number facts and place value for addition.
Ask: βCan you sort the calculations into groups according to how they might most efficiently be solved?β
Say: βSpotting the best way to do a calculation is just as important in Maths as being able to find the right answer!β
They should then work to solve the questions. Discuss with them as they go the most efficient method that should be used.
