Introduction

Before you start the lesson, watch this Recap Video with your student.

To keep mental recall of times tables facts fresh, ask your student to access Hit the Buttonand select 10x tables, 5x tables and 2x tables.

ACCESS - Hit the Button (TopMarks)

Challenge your student to play each of these times tables twice through, aiming to beat their score on the second go.

Recap on the subtraction strategies covered so far this step. Give your student two or three subtractions to do, similar to those already covered, and assess how well they are using the strategies.

Say:

  • I have 85p, here it is.

Show 85p made of 50p, three 10ps and a 5p coin.

Ask:

  • If I buy a banana for 33p, how much money will I have left?

Show how to move away three 10p coins as you count back in 10s.

Explain:

  • Now we have to take away 3. What can we do? What is 5 take away 3?

Remove the 5p coin and replace with a 2p coin.

Say:

  • That leaves me 52p.

Repeat with similar subtractions, inviting your student to think of the items you might buy with a value of 42p, 34p and 51p.

How much is left each time? Which coins are used?

Main Activity

Give your student the prepared subtractions and number cards.

Ask them to discuss which number fits with which box.

Your student should draw empty number line jottings to test their ideas.

Workbook

To help your student consolidate their learning from today, please ask them to complete the activities on page 54 of Abacus Workbook 1.
