Today's Lesson
Note
The following lessons are based on British currency. You may wish to teach your student about your local currency alongside these lessons. Please note, however, that the assignments will assess their understanding of money using British pence (p).
What to Get Ready
It is always preferable for students to learn using real coins. However, if you do not have access to British coins, print out the document π British Coins. You can then cut out pictures of the coins you need.
Introduction
Challenge your student to write a number sentence to add together seven 10p coins.
Write: 10p + 10p + 10p + 10p + 10p + 10p + 10p = 70p.
Point out that this is a very long number sentence.
Explain that there is a quicker way to write it and record: 7 Γ 10p = 70p.
Read this as seven lots of 10p or seven 10s. Point out that we can also say, β7 times 10β. This means we have seven 10p coins, which is 70p altogether.
Record: 7 lots of 10p = 70p. This is another way of writing it.
Repeat with, for example, eight 10p coins, then with five 2p coins, then seven 2p coins.

Main Activity
Using aβ―1-10 dice, ask your child to generate some number sentences from the 10x table.Β
For example, roll the dice, and whatever number it lands on, multiply it by 10 and write the calculation.Β
If a 5 was rolled, you would do 5 x 10 = 50. Your child could count up in 10s to answer if needed.Β
Continue this for approximately 10 minutes.
