This video goes over reading o’clock and half past times on digital clocks. Watch the video with your student to go over some of the basics, and then move on to the Introduction.
Introduction
EXPLORE - Interactive Teaching Clock (TopMarks)
Set the time on the clock to 9 o’clock. Display the digital clock showing 9 o’clock.
Say: ‘This one is a digital clock, where have you seen clocks like this before?’
Point out the 0 before the 9 on 09:00.
Say: ‘This holds the space when it is not 10, 11 or 12 o’clock. You will see it written both ways, with and without the zero, but it means that 03:00 and 3:00 are the same time.’
Then click the ‘+’ after the 30 minutes setting.
Say: ‘The minute hand has moved halfway around the clock and the hour hand has moved to halfway between 9 and 10.’
Ensure that your student understands that the hands on a clock do not ‘jump’ from one time to the next but move round slowly. Use a manual, geared clock to show this if needed.
Point out what has happened to the digital clock. Why? Remind them that there are 60 minutes in an hour. So 9:30 is ‘half past’ because half an hour has gone past.
Say: ‘Let’s see the time half an hour later.’
Click the ½ toggle again. What time is it now?
Repeat several times. You may like to ask your student to close their eyes while you set the time to different half past times, and then to open their eyes again, so that they do not only see a set of ordered times.
Next, hide the screen from your student, advance the time by half an hour and ask them to write the digital time down. Repeat.
Main Activity
Access the 📄 Telling the Time Resource and ask your student to work through the challenges.
Encourage your student to discuss each one with you and to say the times out loud.
Extra Challenge
Challenge your student further by asking what they might be doing at certain times during the day.
Workbook
To help your student build upon their learning from today, please ask them to complete the activities on page 26 of Abacus Workbook 2.
