Today's Lesson

What to Get Ready

Get together a selection of toys to be on sale in a pretend β€˜shop’.

Write the prices of a variety of different amounts up to Β£1, for example, β€˜46p’, β€˜74p’, β€˜28p’, β€˜55p’, β€˜92p’ and attach these to the toys.

Print out the πŸ“„ Rounding numbers activity sheet.

Introduction

Write β€˜32’ on a tag (a small piece of paper) and ask your student to place it after the 32nd bead on the 0-100 bead string.

Ask: β€˜Is 32 nearer to 30 or 40?’

Then explain that to round 32 to the nearest 10, we round it to 30 because that’s the closest multiple of 10.

Explain that if we were adding the prices of lots of toys, and just needed to know roughly how much the whole lot would be, we could round each price to the nearest 10 and then add them together.

Ask your student to find 68, 42 and 98 on the bead string, and round each to the nearest 10.

Now write β€˜45’ on a tag and ask your student to place it in the correct position on the bead sting.

Ask: β€˜Is it nearer to 40 or 50?’

Agree that it is in the middle of these two numbers. Explain that we would round 45 up to 50. Suggest that if you were rounding amounts of money, it would be safer to round 45p up to 50p to make sure you had enough money!

Repeat for 25, 75 and 95, asking your student find these numbers on the bead string and then write the 10 we would round to.

This video demonstrates rounding 2-digit numbers to the nearest 10, using the 0-100 line to help us.

Main Activity

Ask your student to choose an item from the β€˜shop’ and to read out the price, for example, β€˜36p’.

They should then decide which would be the nearest 10p for this amount to be rounded to and record this.

Continue to β€˜shop’ for five items altogether and note down what they would round each item to in order to keep a running total.

Repeat the task with different items for sale.

Next, ask your student to complete the πŸ“„ Rounding numbers activity sheet.
