Today's Lesson
Main Activity 1
Watch the following video about adding and taking away.
Give your student a copy of the π Traffic lights sheet.
Play against your student. Each player should choose any 3 numbers on their sheet and ring them.
One of you should then roll two 0 to 9 dice, and find the total.
If the total is one of the playerβs three numbers, they should colour the top light in red.
Continue until a player has completely coloured one of their three lights red, amber (orange) and green.
Ask: Which numbers appear to be good to choose? Why? Which numbers were not so good to choose?!
Main Activity 2
Model Stick or Roll. Discuss strategies for subtracting 1-digit numbers from 2-digit numbers: using number facts (e.g. for 46 β 3) or bridging 10 (e.g. for 42 β 5).
How to play:
- Play against each other.
- Both players should write 50 at the top of a piece of paper.
- Take it in turns to roll a dice, subtract that number from 50 and write the answer underneath the 50.
- Continue rolling the dice, subtracting the number from the previous answer and writing the new answer underneath each time.
The aim is to get as close to 10 as you can without going under. So, when you get to a number less than 20, decide whether to stick or roll. If you go under 10, you lose.
