Today's Lesson
Introduction
Before you start the lesson, watch this Recap Video with your student.
To keep mental recall of times tables facts fresh, ask your student to access Hit the Button.
ACCESS - Hit the Button (TopMarks)
Challenge your student to play each of these times tables twice through, beating their score on the 2nd go.
Show your student the π Blank clock.
Ask: How long does it take the minute hand to go once all the way around the clock?
How many minutes are in 1 hour?
How long will it take to get half way around the clock?
Discuss that there are 60 minutes in 1 hour, and 30 minutes in half an hour.
Suggest: Letβs count round the clock in steps of 5 (minutes) to check.
Point from 12 to 1 to 2 and so on as you count on steps of 5 minutes to 30. Remind your student that when we reach the quarters or halves we can either say 15, 30, 45, OR quarter past, half past, quarter to and oβclock. When we are using an analogue clock we tend to say the latter.
Main Activity
Working as a pair with your student, one of you makes a time on the teaching clock or small clock. They should say what their time is and then the other player has to make that time on their clock (if you only have one clock available, one of you can draw the hands on a blank clock whilst the other makes the time on the teaching clock).
Compare clocks β do both clocks look the same?
For every pair of clocks you make which are identical, award yourselves 1 point.
Encourage your student to include times which are to the nearest 5 mins as well as quarters of an hour.
Extra Challenge
Each player must also make and say the time which is 10 minutes later than the time made by their partner.
Workbook
To help your student to build upon their learning from today, please ask them to complete the activities on page 35 of Abacus Workbook 3.
